So I am pulling my old Joomla server that I run at home on the broadband. Trying to cut down on the number of VMs I run and have to look after.
Since Citrix pulled the stunt over licensing I have been slowly moving over to ProxMox. It seems OK. I could build a hyper visor stack on Debian with KVM. Then either manage it all with Virtual Manager or a oVirt type manager server but that just seems like too much effort for just wanting to run VMs with least effort. I have been spending time looking at RS232 on the ZX Spectrum +3. There will be a Flaming manual page on it, buggers that built it failed to mention they used "DCE" labelling for the pins. That would be the opposite to PCs which use "DTE"! DCE is usually used on the device end, like a modem (this is why modems connect using straight cables not cross overs). Its a total pain in the arse and not very well documented. There are a few pages out there about serial on the +3 (or 128K), the information tends to be specific like "build a cable for...". The Spectrum BASIC seems to only have commands to use the serial port for running a printer. You can get it to do some other things, like load a program to memory over the serial port. But it isn't cleanly implemented with a few commands, you need to redirect the streams etc. Not great and it also has a requirement for the Handshake pins to be triggered, while the manual implies you can short the pins together (loop back). From my experience so far, I think the isn't true. Flip side Z88DK does have a serial port library. I did manage to compile and run a serial test program that worked. So I should be able to write some programs in C and build a suitable null modem lead to get it networked!
